Lauren Saria at the Arizona Republic recently broke the news that Postino is finally coming to South Tempe after months of research, speculation and anticipation. Lauren tells us that the highly anticpated Postino will open on September 16th, 2020. **Update: They have decided to push that up. The new Postino will be opening on 9/14/20 at 11am.

Where is the new Postino located?

The new location will be at the NE corner of Rural and Warner in south Tempe.

The demographics in south Tempe probably have a lot to do with why Upward Projects wanted to open their newest location at this corner.

Two other excellent restaurants in the same shopping center in Ghost Ranch and Cotton and Copper will more than likely benefit from having such a popular new spot open in the ‘hood.

Success breeds success. My money says to watch for more great new additions to the area in the near future.

The Sign Is Up:

While they don’t open for a couple more weeks, there is some new branding and the interior looks to be shaping up nicely. I think it looks great!

While Mouth By Southwest reports that there was an ill-fated TPMC shut down in January after two years, many of us know that there was nothing “ill-fated” about the Tempe Public Market Cafe. The cafe was SOLD to Upward Projects after months of negotiations. They were successful, they just felt like the time was right for them to sell. Looking back, the timing was probably *really* good for the former owner of the Tempe Public Market.

BUT, our south Tempe neighborhood seems excited to have a new destination for wine, bruschetta and more.

Phoenix-based Upward Projects will open their seventh Valley location of Postino at Rural and Warner.

The opening was originally expected for “mid-2020,” Of course, 2020 hit, and here we are, waiting for them to safely open.

What to expect at Postino in south Tempe

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the new restaurant and wine bar will offer options for customers who want to practice social distancing.

The restaurant will have online ordering for both pickup and delivery via the their website, contactless mobile payment, designated curbside parking spots and steel fabricated way-finding signage to guide guests through the pick-up experience.

As at Postino’s other locations, there will also be large roll-away window walls to create an indoor-outdoor experience.

The restaurant will be open for takeout and dine-in for lunch and dinner.

We’ll be able to choose from their popular promotions like $5 glasses of wine and pitchers of beer each day before 5 p.m. Their signature $25 Bottle & Board on Monday and Tuesday evenings will also be available. Brunch will be served from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

While Portillo’s is new to the Valley, we’ve enjoyed having the Cubs train in Mesa for many years. The new stadium is located just east of the 101 freeway and south of the 202 in the Mesa Riverview area. Portillo’s is located just a couple of minutes west of the new stadium in the Tempe Marketplace at Rio Salado and McClintock.

Since the Scottsdale location of Portillo’s has been open for a while, we’ve heard a LOT of really good things about their grub. The opening of the new Cubs stadium and Portillo’s Tempe location seem to be a match made in Heaven as the proximity to one another almost guarantees an awesome fit for Cubs fans.

Everyone knows that we have a LOT of Illinois transplants in the area, and these places will probably make them all giddy inside. Baseball fans are sure to love the beautiful new ballpark and training fields. The area surrounding the new stadium is sure to grow, as well. “Wrigleyville West” attractions are still being worked out, but there is a lot of room for some new growth in the area. Heck, we’ve even seen a LOT of demand in the Villagio condominiums across the street from where the Cubs are building. Second homes and short term rentals at Villagio can make for some happy Cubs fans.

Of course, happy fans, transplants from the mid-west, and snowbirds help bring dollar bills to the area. Food, drink, housing, transportation, hotels and more. Heck, from the pic below, we see that Cubs fans not only like to have fun, they like to spend money on all kinds of stuff.

This past week, I noticed that a new place opened up in the building next door to us, a place called Spokes on Southern. Naturally, I wanted to see what they were all about. Spokes has a good looking menu of burgers, salads and sandwiches, and they are an “Ale House” which certainly sounds like fun. The building is nice, they have space for private parties, there is an awesome patio and the people seem cool. In doing a little more research about the place, I learned that Spokes on Southern is a “sibling” to Boulders on Broadway which is a Tempe favorite, as well.

Spokes on Southern is in the same building that used to be Sneakers Sports Grill, Streets of New York and the old Uptown Brewery. While these places didn’t make the location work, I have a feeling the people behind Spokes can do very well here. The place really does have a cool feel to it. Their commitment to good food and good beer with a theme that works well in Tempe should be a great fit for the area.

Spokes is a locally owned business which I think is always a plus. In checking them out, I easily found their Facebook and Twitter pages so be sure to follow them.
Seriously, these guys are cool.

I’ve been known to ride my bike to the office once in a while, and I think the whole “bike theme” they have going on at Spokes on Southern is something that I’ll enjoy. It is going to be fun having them as a neighbor.

So, how fun is this? You know it will be a big hit on game night, right?

I love the way these holidays are celebrated in our “Camelot Corner” neighborhood in Tempe. Many residents choose to fly their own flags, but even more proudly wave the flags put up by Scout Troop 576.

A Community That Cares:

For Independence Day, Veterans Day, Labor Day, Flag Day, Presidents Day and Memorial Day, Scout Troop 576 puts up flags in our yards and at neighborhood entryways. They ask for a small and very reasonable annual donation to the Boy Scouts of America and then come to each person’s home early in the morning on each of the holidays to install the flags. That evening, they return to remove and store the flags.

A sincere thank you to Troop 576 for this cool community service!

On my bike ride this morning, I shot photos of a small example of flags in yards within the Camelot Village and Round Valley Estates neighborhoods. Many more flags were flying. The troop puts up nearly 100 flags, I “only” shot about 25.

Each year the Tempe Fantasy of Lights Parade draws approximately 45,000 people looking to get into the holiday spirit. While we always enjoy Thanksgiving with our family and I typically think of turkey day as the beginning of my holiday season, this parade should excite the kids even more. Immediately following the parade people are invited to watch the lighting of the holiday tree located in front of MADCAP Theater on Sixth Street and Mill. Santa Claus will be riding in the parade and then will be hanging out in the MADCAP theater lobby where we can take photos ( at no charge ) with St Nick.

The Tempe Fantasy of Lights Parade begins at Third Street and Mill Avenue and ends at Fifth Street and Maple. Directly across from the starting point of the parade is the METRO light rail station for Mill Avenue. The boys are excited to “ride the train” to the parade!

The map below shows the parade route, the starting and stopping point, the location of the holiday tree, and the MADCAP Theater where Santa will be providing family photo ops. * Parking note * If you are not riding the light rail, the city of Tempe says that you can bring a can of food for the less fortunate and park for free at the lot on Fifth Street and Farmer and at the Tempe City Hall garage on Fifth Street and Forest. The sweet sound of success. Some people hear it, some don’t. If you listen closely, you will hear my good friend Steve Belt talking about what a coffee shop should be. To be clear, I have no idea what it takes to make a great Scottsdale coffee shop but I have no doubt in my mind that Steve knows. You see, for several months, I have been fortunate to hear him talk about his passion for opening an exceptional coffee shop and I have learned more than I really ever thought I would care to know about how he will turn a shell of a building in to a place where people will come to expect great coffee in an inviting atmosphere. I have been a “taste test dummy” and have asked why in the world someone running a very successful business would decide to open a coffee shop. The answers always impressed me.

Soon, Echo Coffee will open in South Scottsdale and will be run by a guy that I have never known to settle for second best. Come mid-April, go on over to 2902 N 68th Street in Scottsdale which is at the Northwest corner of 68th Street and Thomas Road, just 1/2 mile west of Scottsdale Road.  Echo Coffee will be open 7am-10pm, every day, except Christmas, New Years, and Thanksgiving. You really should head over and give it a try. Along with coffee, they will offer fresh pastries, sandwiches, and salads which will be made right in the shop. Free WiFi that actually works really well is also going to be available. The tag line for Echo Coffee is: “Fresh. Local. Organic.”

You might be wondering why in the heck I am writing about Steve and his coffee shop . Well, Steve and I happen to think a lot alike in many aspects of our business. Treating people right, loving what you do and having fun with life can benefit yourself and those around you. I’m looking forward to checking out Arizona’s next great coffee shop…

Please join us Saturday, March 21st as we get together with our friends from Take A Hike Arizona to meet at “A” Mountain in Tempe, for a fun morning hike, stroll or walk up Hayden Butte. The easiest way to get there is via light rail. Exit at the 3rd and Mill station and meet us at the coffee shop on the south west corner. (Mills End Cafe at 310 S Mill Ave) We will leave Mills End at 8:15 for our fun morning “hike.” Hey, what else are you gonna do on a nice Saturday morning that would be more cool than hanging out with some friends and getting some fresh air?
Like they say at Take A Hike Arizona, “The Butte may not qualify as an all out hike, but it does provide a nice quick jaunt uphill (just over 1/2 mile) and provides nice views of downtown Tempe, Tempe Town Lake and the surrounding area.”

Much of the trail is paved and the entire walk probably doesn’t take an hour. It is a perfect Saturday morning trip! Click to see some pics from our recent trip…

The Butte is also a designated historical landmark. Just off the trailhead on the Leonard Monti Trail, you can find a number of petroglyphs carved into the rock by the Hohokam people. I recently spoke with Michael Monti (Leonard’s son) and I believe he will be joining us in the morning. It will be fun to learn some of the history of the Butte from him.

The founders of Take a Hike Arizona Tracey Epel and June Kleier will be on hand to join us as well. They have a very fun attitude about outdoor activities and I have enjoyed getting to know them recently.

The plan is to meet on Saturday morning, March 21st at 8:00am at Mills End Cafe which is located directly south of the light rail stop at 3rd Street and Mill Avenue. Mills End will be easy to find, just look for the Rail Life banner in the window Saturday morning. We plan to leave (ie: cross the street,) by 8:15am.
